Candidates from other countries with an IFLA recognised undergraduate qualification of an equivalent standard may also be eligible for direct entry at year 2.

Candidates from other very closely related disciplines (principally Architecture and Urban Design) may be considered, subject to providing evidence of a Level 6 understanding and knowledge of additional subject areas specific to landscape architecture.

Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted English qualifications can be viewed on the

Architecture Conversion Route

Candidates with a minimum of a second-class degree in a UK undergraduate RIBA validated and ARB prescribed architecture course (whilst this is available) will normally be accepted into the architect conversion route. Candidates from other countries with a recognised undergraduate qualification of an equivalent standard may also be eligible for this entry route.

The suitability of all applicants will be assessed via portfolio review of work produced during the undergraduate programme and work experience if relevant.

Careers

Career opportunities

The MLA provides students with a wide range of skills which make them highly employable, usually within the landscape architecture profession, but often beyond. In addition to industry-specific proficiency in a range of analogue and digital communication skills, the course also promotes critical and creative thinking and encourages students to develop a sense of their own identity and agency in addressing social and environmental challenges. Our pedagogy also helps students to develop a wide range of inter-personal skills in collaborative working and communication to a wide range of audiences, using visual, verbal or written media.

The programme team collaborates with practices and organisations in the delivery of teaching across the curriculum, promoting regular opportunities for students to visit sites or practices and to receive guidance from experienced professionals in fields of relevance to the subject. The Landscape Profession and Practice module, at the end of the second year, specifically focusses on life as a professional, inviting numerous practitioners to contribute, and encouraging students to think reflectively and critically about the diverse range of opportunities available to them within and beyond the profession, and to position themselves within this broad spectrum.

The vast majority of our graduates (over 90%) go on to find employment in landscape architecture, either in the UK or abroad, many due to connections established during the course. MLA alumni are to be found in positions of responsibility, in the UK and globally, and have been involved in the delivery of landmark projects around the world. Outside London, the North-West of England is the base for more landscape practices than anywhere else in the country. Our students are actively sought out by a wide range of organisations, from small private practices to public sector or non-profit making organisations to international, multi-disciplinary firms. A small number choose to seek employment in other fields or take a career path that leads them in other directions but find that the skills and knowledge they have gained with us give them the ability to adapt, evolve and redirect their focus to numerous other areas of work, which have included: teaching; software design; theatre production; fashion; environmental charities; and many others.

Accrediting organisations

The revised Master of Landscape Architecture programme is currently undergoing a full accreditation review by the Landscape Institute (LI).

Please be aware that accreditation is not guaranteed. If the programme is accredited following the review, the LI has indicated that recognition towards chartership for students who enrolled during this time may be backdated 鈥 this cannot be confirmed in advance. We will update this page as soon as we have further information 鈥 please check back for updates.
