Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview

You will normally have at least an upper second class undergraduate UK honours degree (or international equivalent) in a related field, including architecture, architecture technology, conservation, spatial design or interior architecture, or an equivalent architectural, design or humanities based undergraduate degree (including history, geography, urbanism, conservation, heritage, environmental science, architectural or design history).

Equivalent EU/international qualifications are also accepted. Applicants who do not meet these criteria will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Other professional qualifications or degree disciplines will be considered on merit and/or with relevant professional experience.

We require the submission of a digital portfolio to evidence design/architectural practice and research, and may request an interview as part of the application process. Applicants with an undergraduate degree in architecture, interiors, design or art should make a 10-15 page portfolio that shows work that has been produced during the UG programme, if you have spent time in practice then that should also be included. If you do not have this background, then the portfolio should contain examples of work completed during the UG programme, such as a report or study, plus any post-degree work that you have completed - again 10-15 pages.

Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification.

Course description

What if the buildings that shape our cities could be reimagined for a more sustainable future rather than replaced?

As the challenges of climate change, urban growth and resource consumption continue to influence the built environment, the ability to intelligently adapt and transform existing buildings has become one of the most important skills in contemporary architectural practice. The MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse at 野狼社区 School of Architecture (MSA) equips you to lead this change, developing innovative design responses that balance environmental responsibility, cultural heritage and future needs.

This postgraduate course explores how existing buildings, places and communities can evolve to accommodate new uses and users. You will investigate the environmental, social and economic dimensions of adaptive reuse while developing expertise in conservation, heritage, construction, materials, environmental control and sustainable design strategies. Through research-informed, studio-based learning, you will combine critical thinking with creative design practice to create meaningful interventions for real-world contexts.

As part of the internationally recognised 野狼社区 School of Architecture, ranked among the world鈥檚 leading architecture schools, you will benefit from a programme jointly delivered by 野狼社区 Metropolitan University and The University of 野狼社区. Students gain access to specialist workshops, fabrication facilities, libraries and digital resources across both institutions, alongside teaching from research-active academics, practitioner-tutors and visiting industry experts. Strong professional connections, practice visits and building studies ensure your learning remains closely aligned with contemporary industry challenges and opportunities.

Whether you aspire to work in architecture, interior design, conservation, heritage management or further academic research, this course provides the knowledge, practical experience and critical perspective needed to make a meaningful impact. By focusing on sustainable transformation rather than demolition and replacement, you will graduate prepared to shape the future of buildings, cities and communities in an increasingly resource-conscious world.

Course unit details

The MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse at 野狼社区 School of Architecture (MSA) explores one of the most significant challenges facing the built environment today: how to transform existing buildings and places to meet the needs of future generations. Focussing on sustainable innovation, heritage, conservation and creative design thinking, the course examines how buildings can evolve, accommodate new users and reduce environmental impact while retaining their cultural and historical value.

Throughout the programme, you will investigate the environmental, social and economic principles that underpin adaptive reuse. Studio-based projects are combined with research-informed teaching, enabling you to develop expertise in sustainable design, conservation, construction technologies, environmental control, materials, planning and legislation. You will also explore wider themes including culture, heritage, memory, community and urbanism, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how architecture responds to changing societal needs.

Students undertake in-depth investigations of existing sites and buildings, producing feasibility studies and design proposals that translate research into real-world opportunities. Typical projects may involve reimagining underused historic buildings, developing sustainable strategies for urban regeneration, or proposing new interventions that balance conservation with contemporary use. As you progress, you will establish your own intellectual and creative position through an independent design thesis and research project, allowing you to pursue topics aligned with your interests and career ambitions.

As part of 野狼社区 School of Architecture鈥攔anked among the world's leading architecture schools鈥攜ou will study within a programme jointly delivered by 野狼社区 Metropolitan University and The University of 野狼社区, graduating with a degree bearing both institutions' names.

You will learn from research-active academics, practising architects and industry professionals whose expertise directly informs the curriculum. Practitioner-tutors, international guest speakers, practice visits and building studies ensure that teaching remains connected to current professional and academic debates.

The course provides access to specialist workshops, fabrication facilities, libraries, computer suites and media spaces across both universities. Students can utilise advanced making and prototyping facilities, supporting experimentation with materials, fabrication techniques and design development.

Located in one of the UK's most dynamic and rapidly evolving cities, 野狼社区 offers a living laboratory for adaptive reuse and urban regeneration. Supported by strong industry connections and an extensive employer network, you will graduate with the knowledge, technical skills and critical perspective needed for careers in architecture, interior design, conservation, heritage management, research and doctoral study, helping shape a more sustainable future for the built environment.
