The benefits of being an online student with The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø

The benefits of online learning with The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø

Online learning at The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø provides a host of benefits for students looking to achieve their educational and career goals alongside work and other commitments. As well as the ability to study from anywhere in the world at a time that fits around your schedule, being an online student with The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø offers a wide range of other benefits which you can explore below.

Flexibility

Online learning gives you the flexibility to study around your life. With online lectures, tutorials and learning materials provided through our Virtual Learning Environment, you can access everything you need at a time that suits you.

It is important to note that many of our courses do contain synchronous learning – meaning you will attend live classes with your fellow students, and these will be at set times. The asynchronous learning, however, can be completed in your own time.

As a full-time NHS Consultant, mother, and partner to a busy surgical doctor, I needed a flexible course that fit my demanding schedule while offering opportunities to engage with faculty and peers.

Bringing The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø to you, wherever you are in the world

For many students, coming to Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø to study their postgraduate degree isn’t an option. Work, family commitments, and relocation can make in-person study more difficult. With online learning, students are given the ability to study with The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø from wherever they are in the world, opening up access to our world-leading teaching and research worldwide and removing barriers to education.

Coming to the UK for a year or two wasn't an option for me, so it really was perfect to have an international education in a blended programme.

Academic excellence

Studying online with The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø means you’ll be studying at one of the best universities in the world. Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø has been ranked among the top 40 universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027, achieving an overall score of 84.6 and performing strongly in international research collaboration (7th globally), sustainability (1st in the UK in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Rankings), employer reputation (28th) and academic reputation (32nd). Our status as a Red Brick university and a member of the Russel Group is a testament to the University’s academic, research and teaching excellence.

The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø stood out to me, both for its place as a traditional Red Brick University and as a member of the Russell Group and also for its international reputation.

The same support and qualifications as on-campus students

While some aspects of studying online differ from on campus (for example living in Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø, or having in-person classes) you will still receive the same support and qualifications as in person students. Online studies at UoM carry the same academic rigour as on campus courses, and students have access to the same resources including academic support, the library, careers, and wellbeing support. You can explore support for online students here.

The following are an example of the support you will receive as an online student at The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø:

  • You can either access the resources remotely or go into any library building on campus in Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø using your student card. The direct access link to the library is here:
  • All essential reading for each unit will be available digitally via the Virtual Learning Environment. If there is a core text for a unit, this will be made available to you via Kortext throughout your course and after.
  • A University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø student email which will provide you access to online and on-campus facilities, services and student discounts.
  • An invitation to attend your graduation ceremony at The University of Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø campus.

There were many ways that The University was able to support students taking the course, but what particularly stood out for me was the contact from the personal tutors, who were incredibly helpful if there were any queries at all.

An online community

While you may be studying physically separated from your classmates, you’re nonetheless connected online and will have plenty of opportunities to form lasting networks and friendships throughout your studies.

As well as group work, peer reviews, and group tutorials, many cohorts connect informally via social media and other networks. You’ll be studying alongside students from across the world, building bonds with fellow students from within and without your industry, giving you a truly global perspective on your subject area.

Studying online can sometimes feel isolating, but the course is designed to be highly collaborative. Despite being spread across the world, we work together in a dynamic virtual learning environment.

Putting learning into practice

Unlike other full-time postgraduate degrees, the flexibility of online and part-time postgraduate study means you can apply your learning to your career from day one. Our courses are designed with working professionals in mind, with industry-relevant content and many courses offering the opportunity to apply the course unit material directly to your work – for example via your dissertation. Studying online and part-time allows you to simultaneously grow your knowledge, skillset and your career prospects.

I’ve applied what I learned in many areas of my work, particularly my dissertation, which was invaluable to my current role.
